Canyon View Middle School Cougars

Parents and guardians,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we dealt with the emergency at Canyon View Middle School Thursday.  In the midst of the emergency, school staff received conflicting information from medical personnel regarding carbon monoxide levels that should be further tested.  As we have reviewed the response Thursday, it also has come to our attention that not all D Hall students were tested. Medical personnel on the scene advised at the time that only those with symptoms or concerns should be tested.

Students who were tested and measured over 6 were advised to be checked by a doctor. About 24 students and staff members were seen in the emergency room Thursday. Many were then sent to St. George for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

If your student is experiencing carbon monoxide exposure symptoms, please consider having them tested in the emergency room. Those neurological symptoms include:

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Slurred speech

Emergency room medical personnel may recommend hyperbaric oxygen therapy. You can also call the hyperbaric unit in St. George directly 435-251-4015 with any concerns or questions.

The school has been monitored this morning and cleared by the Cedar City Fire Department for occupation. No gas-powered equipment will be in use today in the remodel area of the construction until after school hours.

The safety of your students and our staff members is very important to us. At any time you as a parent feel it is unsafe for your child to be at school, we trust you to make the ultimate call with school attendance. Teachers will work with students to make up any missed assignments.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeralyn Shaw
